International career

He is currently the captain of his national team, taking the place of Jordan's previous national team captain Hassouneh Al-Sheikh, who left the national team before the 2011 AFC Asian Cup. He was one of the players of Jordan who participated in the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification, and both the 2004 Asian Cup, and the beginning of the 2011 Asian Cup. He also participated in the 2011 AFC Asian Cup qualification. He is part of the reason why his nation Jordan made it to the 2011 Asian Cup. During the 2011 AFC Asian Cup qualification, on match day 2 in Singapore city with their opponent team Singapore, of group E, he scored a penalty goal at 41 min thanks to a foul made by one of the Singapore defenders on Hatem's teammate Odai Al-Saify in their penalty area when Odai was trying to receive a cross from his teammate Abdel-Hadi Al-Maharmeh. But unfortunately, Singapore was able to score the winning goal of the match at 62 min by Noh Alam Shah. And on match day 4 with Iran in Amman, Jordan had a free kick at 77 min from their side of the field. Hatem took the free kick and gave his teammate Odai a far cross from behind to the left of Iran's penalty area. When Odai received Hatem's cross ahead on the left, he passed the ball to his teammate at the right Amer Deeb and allowed him to score the one and only goal of the match, which lead to a victory for Jordan.

Although Hatem was part of the reason why Jordan made it to Qatar in 2011, he wasn't able to participate in all of Jordan's matches in the 2011 Asian Cup after their draw with Japan because of an injury he received from Japan on match day 1 with them. During his injury, his teammate Bashar Bani Yaseen took his place as captain of the national team for the rest of the 2011 Asian Cup.
